Rogue Cellar information

About Rogue Cellar

Rogue Cellar is a general liquor store with a deliberately short shelf. We keep spirits and wine in the same room and the same list: a Speyside single malt, a Kentucky straight rye, a Loire Sauvignon Blanc and a non-vintage brut Champagne are four bottles that can stand on one counter without contradiction. The point of a store this size is not volume. It is that every bottle on it has a reason to be there.

The site is arranged the way a cellar is arranged, by place and by style, rather than by marketing category. If you already know you want something from the Loire, or something peated, or something at 50% ABV that will survive a lump of ice, you should reach it in one or two clicks and be able to compare like with like.

What we publish on every listing

Four facts do most of the work when you are choosing blind, so they appear on every bottle we list.

Detail Why it changes your decision
Origin Place is the strongest single predictor of style. Speyside malt and Kentucky rye are both whiskey; they taste nothing alike, and the difference begins with where they were made and what the rules there allow.
ABV Strength sets both texture and serving. A 12.5% white wine is a chilled aperitif; a 50% rye is a spirit you dilute on purpose or stir into a cocktail.
Volume 700 ml and 750 ml are different national conventions, and bottle size changes the price of a serving. We quote the fill, not the shape of the glass.
Serve A temperature and, where it helps, a food, in one line. Serving advice is the quickest way to get a bottle right the first time.

Why the region comes first

Most disappointment in a liquor store comes from buying a style instead of a place. If you like a taut, chalky Sauvignon Blanc from the eastern Loire, you will probably enjoy its neighbours and find the same grape grown somewhere warmer soft and sweet by comparison. Learn one region properly, its climate, its rules and its usual strength, and you can navigate a shelf you have never seen before. That is what our region guide is for.

A mixed shelf also makes comparison possible. Two bottles from adjacent ground beside each other teach you more in one evening than a dozen tasting notes, which is why we would rather stock one superb example of a style than five nearly identical ones.

Storage, honestly described

What happens to a bottle after you open it matters as much as what was in it when it left. Our second guide sets out how long an opened spirit really lasts, why a 20% fortified wine behaves nothing like a 43% malt, and why headspace, light and a warm shelf above a stove do more damage than the cork ever will.

What we do not do

We publish no health claims about alcohol, and we do not call a bottle the best, the smoothest or a guaranteed anything. We do not invent awards, scores, certifications or a company history. The specification and the serving note are the argument.

Age, delivery and the operator

This is a 21+ store. An adult signature is required at delivery and identification may be checked at the door.Registered business details and alcohol licence information are available on request from customer support.

If you would rather not guess

Write to us with what you are cooking, what you usually drink and what you want to spend. We will answer with one or two bottles from the shelf and a reason for each, and if nothing we stock fits, we will say so.
