Alcohol Warning and Disclaimer
The federal warning
GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.
The wording above is the statement United States law requires on every container of alcoholic beverage sold in this country. We reproduce it here without alteration.
Where it appears
The warning is printed by the producer on each bottle and on the outer carton of every container we ship, and it is repeated here so that it is visible before purchase as well as at the door.
Drinking responsibly
Alcohol affects people differently depending on body weight, food, medication and time. Do not drink and drive, do not drink while pregnant, and do not drink if a medical professional has told you not to. Pace yourself, alternate with water, and stop when you have had enough. No bottle on this shelf is worth an accident.
Serving sizes
A standard drink in the United States contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol, roughly a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirits, a 5 oz glass of 12% wine or a 12 oz beer of about 5%. A bottle poured generously delivers more than one standard drink, so count the pour rather than the glass.
If you need help
The SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential and available at all hours for anyone concerned about their own drinking or someone else’s.
